INSTRUCTOR: Patriot Firearms (Rick Schue - bio)

Looking for a good class to earn your WI CCW permit? Look no further. We don’t believe in the permit farms some instructors run - cycling as many people through as possible with minimal effort and giving them almost no true understanding of the real responsibility of carrying a firearm. Our belief is that students should leave with actual knowledge and things to consider, with all of their questions answered. Simply having a permit will not prepare you for everything when using a firearm for self defense.

So we’ve teamed up with an experienced NRA certified instructor to create a class that satisfies all WI DOJ requirements for students to earn their Wisconsin concealed carry license, which is accepted in 35 states.

This class covers more than the basics required for obtaining a WI permit. Students will also dive deeper into critical information on the use of deadly force, handling the aftermath, and understanding what is allowed in various situations.

Areas covered in this course:

Firearm Safety

  • Four fundamental safety rules
  • Safety considerations of carrying a handgun
  • Handgun types (semi-auto/revolver, hammer/striker fired, and rimfire/centerfire), their situations of use advantages and disadvantages
  • Size of handguns along with advantages and disadvantages
  • Safety mechanisms on firearms (Manual safety, trigger safety, drop safeties, firing pin blocks, hammer blocks, de-cockers, magazine disconnects, half-cock, etc.)
  • Ammunition styles and situations for use (FMJ, hollow point, frangible, +P, weights, etc.) and caliber effectiveness
  • Determining if a handgun is loaded (Indicators, peep hole, press check, etc.)
  • Unloading a handgun safely
  • Common malfunctions and clearing techniques
  • Proper firearm maintenance
  • Storage around family members, home locations, vehicle, and storage safes (Quick/secure rapid access vs big safe)
  • Safe storage and responsibility of firearms around children

Safe Carry Considerations

  • Brandishing or showing off - who should know you are carrying a weapon?
  • Ways to carry a handgun safely (OWB, IWB, AIWB, Purse, Packs, and holster types) and methods that are not as safe
  • Weapon mounted lights or handheld, target identification
  • Types of sights (Black, white dots, fiber optic, night sights, red dots, laser sights) advantages and disadvantages
  • Sighting and aiming (Sight picture/alignment, eye dominance, body anatomy and where to aim)
  • Lifestyle of carrying (clothing, repetition, responsibility)
  • Maintaining control of the weapon (limit weapon conversations, concealing, removing self from situation)
  • Violent confrontation avoidance techniques (situational awareness and mental preparedness)
  • Cover vs concealment during times of confrontation
  • Law enforcement interaction
  • Practice techniques for drawing and presenting using dry fire or laser training devices
  • Practice with different ammo and testing your carry ammo

Legal Implications of CCW

  • Legally possessing a firearm and what you cannot carry
  • Less than lethal options
  • Transportation of a firearm (locally, states, and reciprocity levels)
  • Legal presentation of firearms
  • Determining use of deadly force (situational decisions, castle doctrine, political agendas) and when to start and stop shooting
  • Pre and post shooting stress (coordination, auditory exclusion, vision acuity, memory degradation, and PTSD)
  • Criminal and civil liability differences (financial exposure and carry insurance)
  • Incident scenarios from current situations
  • Locations where you cannot carry a concealed handgun (signage, school zones, etc.)
  • Considering carry insurance
