Defensive Shotgun Competency and Tactics is the capstone defensive shotgun class for experienced and practiced shotgun shooters wishing to use their defensive shotgun at a higher level. This fast-paced class builds off of the skills learned in the intermediate and advanced shotgun classes, and will continue to hone those techniques to greater proficiency. Completion of this class generally signifies a highly proficient defensive shotgun user.

This class focuses on dynamic movement, using cover, recognizing shell requirements, and working from various positions. Partner work and tactical situations are introduced and students are expected to keep their shotgun up and running throughout the day as an added test of skill. Inefficiencies will be identified and corrected.

This course can be run with a reliable pump action or semi-auto shotgun either 12 or 20 gauge. Students should have ghost ring or red dot sight equipped shotgun, though bead and rifle sights are permitted (understanding their limitations). No magazine fed or bullpup shotguns are allowed in this class.

• Safety considerations for a dynamic environment
• Perfecting loading, reloading, and shell changes
• Continued improvement in presentation and quick shots
• Judging target distances and changing to ideal shell to engage
• Perfecting corrective actions for malfunctions
• Working with cover, concealment, and open space, solo and with a partner
• Transitioning to a sidearm effectively
• Moving more efficiently in a 3D environment
• Exploring basic tactics and the nuances/advantages of using the shotgun in common environments
• Additional load and ballistic testing against common barriers and substrates

Prerequisites:

• Advanced-level shotgun class or equivalent (intermediate level possible if student demonstrates acceptable proficiency)
• Open mind
• Must be lawful for you to possess a firearm in the United States

Student supply list:

• Reliable pump or semi-auto shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge, choked to accept required ammo types
  • NO mag-fed or bullpup style shotguns allowed
• Sling and side saddle
• Handgun and proper holster/belt - no soft sided or SERPA holsters
• 200 rounds of birdshot, 100 rounds of buckshot, and 25 rounds of slugs (quality ammo recommended for patterning)
• 15 rounds of chosen defensive ammo
• 100 rounds for handgun
• Ability to carry 25 shotgun rounds - carrier, belt, chest rig, dump pouch
• Magazine pouches for pistol mags and at least 3 magazines
• Note taking gear
• Eye protection
• Ear protection
• Baseball type cap or a hat
• Smart phone

What you need to know before attending:

• There is a $25 range usage fee for non-members of host club. If choosing not to prepay, please bring exact cash to training. If you are registering for multiple people who are a mix of members and non members, please make separate purchases for members and non members as the prepaid fee applies to every registrant.
