The Introduction to Defensive Rifle training class is a one day class split between classroom time and the range. This class is ideal for shooters new to the carbine platform (AR15), but experienced shooters might also appreciate revisiting the fundamentals. If you've never taken a formal class before, this is a good place to start and will identify bad habits. We explain everything, demonstrate it, and then walk you through both dry fire and live fire training techniques.

The class touches on firearms safety, storage, selection, and legal issues before hitting the range for crawl-walk-run shooting instruction. Students will learn zeroing and basic marksmanship fundamentals before progressing into proper presentation, correcting malfunctions, and reloading. We also cover how to shoot multiple rounds and positional shooting. We use coaching and debriefs to ensure you are properly developing the skill sets necessary to be a responsibly armed citizen.

Areas covered during this class:

  • Safety - handling, range, storage, operational
  • Dealing with violence of action and post-shooting issues
  • Fitting and selecting the proper carbine/rifle for you
  • How semi-automatic rifles work
  • When to deploy the rifle
  • Basic rifle marksmanship: grip, stance, sight picture, sight alignment, trigger control, follow-through
  • Zeroing the AR platform and understanding sight over bore
  • Natural point of aim and target acquisition
  • Developing the proper shooting presentation from low ready
  • Common malfunctions and corrective actions
  • Loading, clearing, reloading, and press checking
  • Dryfire training techniques
  • Discussion of optic-equipped weapon systems (red dots, LPVO, scopes, etc)
  • Shooting multiple rounds accurately and quickly
  • Shooting from alternative positions both with and without movement involved

Prerequisites:

  • Open mind
  • Must be lawful for you to possess a firearm in the United States
