Our most attended class, Intermediate Scoped Carbine is designed for students who have a solid grasp on the fundamentals of marksmanship and weapon handling, and want to focus on pushing the accuracy and effective range of their lightweight, magnified carbine. This course is geared towards lightweight, 5.56mm/.223 AR-15 pattern carbines, however lightweight, bolt-action carbines with lower-power magnified optics can be utilized with an understanding of their capabilities and limitations. While self-defense provides the context for the material taught in this course, the instruction is relevant to anyone looking to increase their effectiveness with a carbine at extended ranges for hunting, recreation, or competitive shooting.
Students should arrive at this course with a properly zeroed optic (we recommend 50 or 100 yards), and 250 rounds of consistent quality ammunition. Students will receive a refresher on rifle marksmanship, with a focus on precision shooting at extended ranges. Students will receive instruction on external ballistics, wind, and other factors that can affect bullet impacts at extended ranges. Some close range work will be conducted, however, a majority of this training will be focused on teaching students how to obtain reliable “DOPE” for their rifles, and applying appropriate holds to engage targets out to 600 yards, increasing their probability of a first-round hit. Students will have practice as spotters for other students and also learn about basic positional shooting, barricade, and tripod techniques for engaging long range targets.
This course is appropriate for lightweight carbines with low-power magnified optics (i.e. 1-6, 2-10) and red dot / magnifier combinations. Some equipment may limit students from being effective beyond 300 yards. Students should not let those equipment limitations dissuade them from participating in this course. Each student will learn the capabilities of their equipment and have targets to engage that are challenging, yet reasonable for their platform.
